One of the most overlooked engines around is a lawn mower. With seasonal usage and the perception that it uses a 'no maintenance' engine, many lawn mower owners simply use their lawn mower until it breaks, and then take it to a lawn mower specialist. While it's true that, like every engine, there are going to be breakdowns that need a professional, there is a lot that each owner can do to extend the time between these visits.

Easy Steps to Keep Your Mower in Good Working Order

Along with providing high-quality motor oil for car owners to perform a synthetic oil change, Willburner also stocks a number of products for your lawn mower. Below is a basic checklist to help get you started with performing lawn more maintenance.

More Than Just a Nice Looking Mower

The benefits of keeping your lawn mower clean go further than just aesthetics. Grass and debris can quickly build up on the body and engine of your lawnmower, leading to corrosion and engine wear. After each use, give it a good wash and make sure it's dry before storing it.

Keep the Spark Alive

While it may only have one spark plug, without it, your lawn mower isn't going to start. If you have been operating your lawn mower for around 100 hours, it's a good idea to check the condition of your spark plug or even just replace it. When you are performing any type of work to your spark plug, it's important for safety that the lawnmower is face down and the blades are covered.

Keep Your Oil Clean

While it may not use a large quantity of oil, the quality of the oil that runs through your engine determines how well your engine performs. Your owner's manual is the best place to check how often you need to perform a synthetic oil change, however, if you can see the quality of the oil inside your tank is low, now would be the time. To make sure you only use the best motor oil for your synthetic oil change, speak with Willburner at (772) 770-3448 about the make and model of your lawn mower. With access to a range of high-quality AMSOIL engine lubricants, Willburner will make sure you get the one best suited to your lawn mower.

Clean Your Air Filter

As you mow you lawn, small pieces of grass and dirt are going to get thrown into your air intake. To stop this debris from entering your engine, your air filter catches it. However, once it becomes too clogged, it begins to starve your engine of air.
  • If you are using a paper based filter and it has become clogged, a straight replacement is in order.
  • If you have a foam based air filter, a quick rinse with some hot water and a bit of detergent will do the trick. However, it's important to remember that even a foam based filter has a lifespan. If, after cleaning it, it looks a little worse-for-wear, consider a replacement.

Check Your Blades

Despite your lawn mower not being able to do its job without blades, checking the condition of them is often overlooked by most lawn mower owners. However, with the amount of debris that they encounter, they can easily become damaged, which not only leads to a reduction in their ability to cut your grass but can be a serious safety hazard. With your spark plug removed, turn over your lawn mower and thoroughly inspect the blades. If you notice any chunks are taken out, or there are cracks in the blades, remove the blade and replace it immediately and before using your mower. If you can see that the blades have become blunt, this would be one of the times to take it in for service.

Keep It Stored Correctly

The worse thing that you can do is leave your lawn mower out in the rain. At the very least, place it under a basic shelter to protect it from direct water. The best place to store your lawn mower would be in your shed, elevated from the ground, and covered with a breathable covering. This is to prevent moisture buildup which can affect the engine and body of your lawn mower.
